Unique framing ideas for your art and photos

“We mostly see what we have learned to expect to see.”   – Betty Edwards

It’s always fun to see something in a different way, especially when you are framing a piece of art. And there are so many different framing ideas to choose from that sometimes the final design you decide upon wasn’t what you thought it would be. We love showing you unique framing ideas and the possibilities of how color, framing material, and matting can change the look and feel of what you frame. There isn’t just one way to frame a treasure! Here are different framing ideas applied to the same photos:

Baby portrait framing ideas

This darling cuddly baby deserves to be surrounded by a frame that is warm and soft. The frames all share a delicate element, tying in with the nature of the portrait. There is no need for matting because the blanket in the portrait serves that visual purpose.

Abstract landscape framing ideas

Abstract art naturally lends itself to a world of possibilities. This focal point is obvious, but do you go with the neutral mat? Or a mat the color of sunshine? Or the color of the mountains? How fun do you want it to be?

Here’s a throwback look of a rugged house in the woods. Because it has a subtle, serene feel, we didn’t get too crazy with the design. We varied the mat colors just a bit. Which one works for you?

Mother and daughter photo framing ideas

Mother and daughter, is there anything more special? A classic black mat was used to contrast with the lightness of the portrait. So, the next question is what kind of frame? A striking bold silver, a feminine antique, or a gentle silver with soft curves mimicking the waves in their hair?

Pomegranate painting photo framing ideas

This lovely painting depicts ripe pomegranates harvested from the landscape in the background. Do you choose the lively silver frame with wood accents and curves that work with the pomegranates, or the gold/silver coloring to coordinate with your décor? Or a darker coloring for contrast? The choice is yours.

    Mat Choices

In additioin to all the different framing ideas, do you know how many mat choices you have to choose from at Frame Depot? Just ask us! We have…

    • Fabric mats – linen, silk, burlap. These mats give your artwork different looks, from elegant to vintage to casual.
    • Mats made to look suede for a rich, soft look. PS – they’re not really suede!
    • Mats with different color cores (the beveled white line you see at the edge of a mat) offer a more personalized touch to the art. Cream for an antique look, black for a defining line, and colors for fun.
    • ‘Rag’ mats when you want the very best. They are the best because they are made from 100% cotton. They have no properties that can harm the art.
    • There are ‘leather’ mats for a masculine or wild west look.
    • Even sports mats that looks like pigskin or a golf ball.

Color trends 2022: Fresh new year – fresh color palette

Purple flower image and color trends 2022

For over 20 years, Pantone has been at the forefront of color trends and has determined a ‘Color of the Year’ based on design trends, socio-economic conditions and our global culture. This year, for the first time, a new color was created to reflect the challenging, changing times we are all going through. Drum roll, please…

    Introducing Very Peri!

pantone color of the year - very periHow do you describe Very Peri? It’s a dynamic blue with violet-red undertones. Pantone describes it as blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red.

While Pantone concentrates on an all-encompassing color trend, paint companies who determine ‘Colors of the Year’ use the same criteria geared towards home interiors.

Playing on last years ‘calm me down and help me feel secure’ color trends, it’s unanimous! Green is the home décor color of 2022! Green is a calming color and represents regrowth. With that in mind, let’s look at colors the major paint companies say will be everywhere next year.

October Mist is a muted shade of sage green that can carry a look without drawing too much attention to itself.

    Olive Sprig by PPG
This is a crisp, earthy color that mimics nature’s resiliency and can blend into any environment.

Using this year’s color trends in design: What will your room be wearing this year?

Very Peri could be an overall color if you are bold enough, but it will probably work best as an accent color. As part of this year’s color trends, muted greens can work as understated wall colors or accents.

    Add glam with mirrors!

    Add glam with mirrors!

    Add glam with mirrors!

    Add glam with mirrors

    Create drama, style, and space!

Are you hosting a holiday party and need to dress up your décor? Do you want to add some drama to a non-descript space or room? That’s easy — add a mirror custom framed with a touch of glamour!

    Mirrors can do many things:

    • Create visual space
    • Emphasize lighting
    • Add glamour!

    Mirrors & Space

A floor to (almost) ceiling mirror can make a room look taller. If you place a mirror at the end of a hall, the hall will appear longer. Placed in an entry, the mirror can visually double the space. Mirrors creating space work especially well in small rooms such as dressing rooms and bathrooms.

    Mirrors & Light

Looking for a natural way to add light to your room? A mirror can do that! Place the mirror where the light naturally falls in a particular room to increase illumination.

Another trick is placing the mirror adjacent to a window (opposed to opposite it). Voila! More light! What about rooms that have few or no windows, like a dressing room or an entry? Place a lamp or sconce adjacent to or in front of the mirror to double its lighting effect. For a glamour, hang a chandelier, but keep the wattage down for mood lighting. Remember, the larger the mirror, the more light you see!

    Mirrors & Size

One of the biggest mistakes when creating a mirror is going too small! A mirror needs to be large enough to…

    • Reflect your face (and perhaps outfit)
    • Reflect a scene or a view
    • Bring in light
    • Make a statement

Small mirrors work when you are framing several smaller mirrors together to hang as a grouping – more of a decorative look. If we are building this mirror for you, it will be the exact size you need it to be.

Tip: Is this new mirror going above the mantle? It needs to be the same width as the mantel or just a few inches smaller on each side. Cover at least two-thirds of the space. To make a ceiling feel higher, be generous with the height of the mirror.

    Mirrors & Hanging

The center of framed art is usually hung at eye level, or about 60” above the floor. The rules for mirror placement are a little different:

    • A mirror needs to be hung so that it gives the best reflection. Is it in a hallway or entry? Hang it at eye-height so that you can check yourself as you pass it.
    • In a living space, it is dependent on where it will be hung. If it is above a fireplace mantle, generally, not more than 12” above the mantel. If it is going behind a sofa, don’t hang so high that there is a disconnect between the two. Create a group feel.
    • Lastly, think about what it will be reflecting. If it is opposite a blank wall, hang a piece of art so that the mirror reflects that. If it is the beautiful mountain view outside, hang the mirror at a height that shows the whole view. Depending on what a mirror reflects, it can become a work of art in itself.
    • Looking for glamour with a kick? Frame several small mirrors in different frames and hang as a group.

How to create a glamourous mirror

    1. Determine which room(s) need a mirror.
    2. Do you need more light? More space? More glamour?
    3. Take a picture of the space; measure the space.
    4. Take additional pictures of the room décor.
    5. Come to us — we’ll help you design the perfect mirror, with the exact measurements.
    6. We’ll even install it for you!

    Delivery and installation

Mirrors are big and heavy. They can be tricky to hang properly to support the weight. We would love to hang your new mirror for you. Ask us for more details.

    What’s wrong here?

    what's wrong here?

Do you ever wonder why some framed art is easy to look at, and some makes you want to move past it quickly? It could be the art itself – maybe you don’t care for the style or subject matter, like abstracts or landscapes – but maybe it’s because of the way it’s framed. Yes, the framing design makes a huge difference and there are some simple ways to avoid framing problems with your cherished pieces.

We’ve framed four pieces of art (each with two mats and one frame) in two different ways so you can see how the framing impacts the visual presentation. Let’s take a look at how you can solve some common framing problems.

Framing problems: Serenity in the guest room

This serene, peaceful image is perfect for your guest room, which has green accents and oak furniture. The top mat should be green to match, right? And the frame should match the furniture? Not necessarily. These are some common framing problems that people encounter when worrying about how to make the frame match the decor instead of complement the art.

Neutral colors sourced from the photograph (and not your walls) will let the art shine, as well as blend with your current décor. By matting it just a shade darker than the light on the water, we avoid competition with the focal point. The frame continues the soft, neutral vibe, making it easier and more peaceful to get lost in the serene view.

    Framing problems corrected for photographs

    Family photograph

There is no better reason for a family portrait than an addition to the family! Wouldn’t it be cute to use the baby’s outfit for the mat colors and a brown frame to match those darling curls? Maybe, maybe not. What kind of framing problems can be corrected for these kinds of photos?

If it’s the baby you really want to see and not the frame design, make your eye go right to the focal point. This can be done by letting the bold color of the outfit stand out on its own instead of competing with the framing. In this case, a soft white doesn’t interfere with the blue outfit, taking your eye straight to the baby and the parents’ delighted faces.

    Pink flamingos

You could watch flamingos all day long  so you found a beautiful photo that lets you do just that. Of course, you want the flamingos to be what you see first when you look at it, so the best thing to do is neutralize it with a white mat, right? And the pink frame is a play on the flamingo color! Great idea….or is it? Bright colored images can pose all kinds of framing problems.

In this situation, the white mat contrasts with the pink, so pink is what you see – not the flamingo, just the frame. The white mat is stark – it creates a strong outline around a fairly dark image. Instead, pull the colors from the background, leaving the focal colors alone. Are the flamingos easier to look at now?

Framing problems corrected for abstract art

Abstract art is versatile and can frequently go with any décor because the design is usually non-specific. Abstracts can create a soothing feeling or add a splash of color to a space. Because abstract art sometimes has a lot going on, it’s best to give it space, or it can look confusing. This is the most common framing problem with abstract art but is easily solved to let your art shine through.

This colorful example was designed with the same two mats and frame, but with different matting proportions. The first appears cramped and overwhelmed, forcing your eye to the framing instead of the art. The second is easier on the eyes, with ‘breathing room’ for the art. Which would you rather look at?

How to solve framing problems with the design

    • Stick to colors that are in the art
    • The mat color should not be lighter or darker than any color in the art
    • Contrast the top mat with the focal point
    • Vary the widths of the design package components

You may have even rearranged some things around to create a home office or noticed that your home office needed a redo. A little paint, a new rug and fresh art – that will work! Vacation photos and travel memories make the perfect addition to help take your mind off work occasionally.

    Bringing art home from vacation

While on vacation, you fell in love with a painting that had already been framed. The question is… do you ship it home that way? How much do you love the frame? Will the dealer or artist reduce the price if you don’t want the frame? How much would it cost to ship it home framed?

If you decide to bring the painted canvas back unframed, ask the dealer or artist to remove it from the frame – DO NOT cut it off the frame! Take the staples out of the stretcher frame. Cover the painting with glassine and roll it up (not tightly) and put into a tube – plastic is best. That is the least expensive way, and then you can have it framed exactly the way you want it.

If it is a piece of art on paper, and fairly small, cover both sides with glassine, and secure between two pieces of hardy cardboard. If it is small enough, you should be able to transport it in your luggage. If not, shipping it should not be expensive. Once it is safely home, remove it from the cardboard and take it to your framer so your travel memories can be properly preserved.

Not all art is serious! Some art is just fun, and color is a big part of that. Have you noticed how color can greatly influence the vibe in a room or the tone of art? Do you know how to choose art and décor that can create a certain feeling? Let’s break it down and look at how color influences almost everything around us.

How do you want your space to feel? Playful? Energetic? Bold?

Color can create the mood you want.

    Reds and Oranges

Reds and Oranges are energetic colors. They are used to stimulate the body and mind, promote power, and increase appetite. That’s why many dining rooms and gyms have one or more red or orange walls.

    ADDITIONAL TOPICS

#1 – White mat or black mat? Which color will work best for your project?

    • White is the great neutralizer. Sometimes there can be so many colors and so much action in the art, that it is hard to choose one color – this is where white works well.
    • Black creates negative space so all you see is the art or image.
    • White is a contemporary / fresh, clean / uncluttered look.
    • Black is a sophisticated and elegant look.
    • White works well when you want to group a look (multiple pieces framed the same).

    #2 – Colorful mouldings

Sometimes it’s fun to use a colorful moulding in your framing project. Stop by our showroom to see the many colors we carry in a wide variety of frames, both modern and traditional.

the power of color with frames

    #3 – According to color-related studies

    • Warm-colored (yellows, oranges) placebo pills are more effective than cool-colored (blues, greens) placebo pills.
    • Blue-colored streetlights can lead to reduced crime.
    • Red causes people to react with greater speed and force, something that might prove useful during athletic activities.
    • Black sports uniforms are more likely to receive penalties.
    • Paint your office blue and green: In 1999, researchers at Creighton University found that employees in blue offices felt the most centered, calm, and hopeful towards their work. Since blue can lower heart rates and green can reduce anxiety and is associated with money, a combination of blue and green is best for the office.

It’s all in the details with quality framing

It’s all in the details with quality framing

It’s all in the details with quality framing

Take a closer look at details in quality framing vs bad framing

A question we often hear is, “Why is custom framing expensive?” The quick and easy answer is that it is ‘custom’ – it is being handmade specifically for your design and your needs. More importantly, it is because of the impeccable quality of workmanship we put into every project and our dedication to quality framing. Details matter in custom framing. Here are a few that deserve a closer look and how they can impact quality framing.

mat board issues with quality framing

    Example #1: Matboard issues

    • Notice the over-cut mat corners? This happens when the blade cutting the mat extends further than it should, something that shouldn’t happen in quality framing.
    • The darkened beveled edges are due to the acid in the mat– this can ‘burn’ into your art and damage it. Ask for ‘acid-free’ mats to avoid this.
frame edge issues and quality framing

    Example #2: Frame issues

    • Notice the ragged edges on the corner of the frame? This happens when the blade on the saw that is cutting the moulding isn’t sharp enough, tearing at the wood instead of slicing through it.
    • Some frame corners have large gaps due to uneven cuts or warped moulding. We like to keep our corners clean and even!
quality framing and fitting issues, mat warped in frame

    Example #3: Fitting issues

    • Notice the warped mats? This happens when the mat is cut too large for the frame – squeezing it in the package. It also can happen if moisture creeps into the frame package. Again, something that doesn’t happen with quality frmaing.
    • Turn it over — is there backing paper? This will help keep moisture and dust out, but also bugs that can eat your art.

    Example #4: Glass issues

    • Notice the faded art? This happens because the glass used to protect the art isn’t UV-filtering, meaning it offers no protection from UV rays. Insist on quality framing UV-filtering glass for your next project.
    • Is glare blocking your view of the art? Ask for options that minimize or eliminate glare.

With quality framing, it’s all in the details

All of these issues can easily be avoided.

Quality & Design Quality framing is not as noticeable at first as design, but it’s just as important! We use acid-free and 100% cotton rag mats and UV-filtering glass. Celebrate accomplishments with custom framing

There are few things more important than recognizing a person’s accomplishments, and custom framing is a perfect way to do that. As a child, it can set them on a path of confidence and self-esteem leading to success. For an adult, it is a grand ‘pat on the back,’ and who doesn’t need or want that? For a solider or veteran, it is recognition of what they sacrificed. And last but not least, for our essential personnel – healthcare workers, teachers, the staff at grocery stores, caregivers – there are so many that could use a show of gratitude.

Here are some custom framing examples of how you can show them you care.

    certified picture framer logo, CPF

What is a CPF? It stands for Certified Picture Framer, an industry designation for framing knowledge and skill. It means that the framer is not only experienced, but must keep up with current methods and materials in the industry. The certification must be renewed annually to keep the designation. When a CPF builds your custom framing project, you know it’s in the best hands.

Frame a special memory for Mother’s Day

Frame a special memory for Mother’s Day

Looking for some unique gift ideas for Mother’s Day?

Every year, as Mother’s Day is approaching, we all start trying to find the perfect gift. And we should, because mother’s are awesome and deserve far more than one special day a year to spoil and pamper them. As you are considering gift ideas, think about framing a special memory for your mom. This is something that will be completely original and personal to your mother. All you need to do is find a special item of your mother’s and bring it to us and we will help you design a beautiful frame to showcase it.

Here are some past projects that we have done for our customers. One of these could be the inspiration for the perfect Mother’s Day gift this year.

Was your Mom or grandma a fabulous cook?

Frame her apron along with a copy of a favorite recipe.  Add a photo of her in the kitchen and you’ve created an heirloom that will be passed down through the generations. This is also a great way to preserve an antique apron that she may have saved from her mother or grandmother. Framing it will protect it and now she can display it and relive those happy kitchen memories every time she sees it.

Did she like to crochet, or do needle works?

Is your mother a whiz with a needle and thread? Does she create beautiful needle art that deserves to be framed and preserved? We can cut custom shapes with complementary colored mats to make her design stand out.  With Covid-19 forcing people to stay inside this past year, we have seen an increase in needle works and cross stiches. Here’s your chance to make your mother’s hard work and creativity really stand out.

Does your mother have a favorite piece of art that needs some attention?

Maybe her favorite print could be accentuated with a design cut out of the mat. This customer loved ballet so we put a ballerina in the upper corner to add another custom element. Look around your mother’s house and see if there’s a piece of art that could use a little love. Then ask you mom if you can “borrow” it for a while and then wait for her surprise when she she’s how we’ve improved it.

How about framing a beautiful painting of your mother?

Frame a painting of Mom.  These paintings of this customer’s mom were done on silk when her mother was a child.  She framed them to give as gifts to family members. If you don’t have a painting of your mother, you could find an old photo and have that framed in a special way.

    Did your mother enjoy quilting?

This is one of our favorite projects we have done. A customer brought in an old photo of her grandma working on a quilt with her daughter (the customer’s mom) and we framed it over a remnant of the quilt. What a cool piece to give to Mom for mother’s day. Now both the photo and the quilting square are beautifully preserved.

How about something playful for your mother?

Did your mom have a favorite toy as a child that she still has? Sneak it out of the house and let us make a custom shadowbox to show it off.  This antique doll and all her accessories turned out beautifully, and once again a precious heirloom has been preserved to be passed down and cherished.

Did Mom have a favorite book as a kid?

For this project, a customer brought us three children’s books and Jan painted the mat to make it more kid friendly for a guest room. What a delightful way to preserve a memory.

Jan is our resident “Shadowbox Queen” and following are a few more examples of her handiwork.

Consider framing some small treasures for Mother’s Day?

You can find all sort’s of tiny treasures in grandma’s jewelry box. Her buttons made an interesting collage and we can design a mat to highlight them. Our favorite is this project with items from her jewelry box.  Just add a few photos and you have created a one-of-a-kind memento that will bring smiles every time she looks at it.

Does your mother have any special mementos in a box somewhere?

These beaded gloves came out of a box to a place of honor on the wall where everyone can enjoy them. We used museum glass so each bead can be seen clearly without the reflection of normal glass, and it’s UV protected to preserve the art. Talk about some beautiful heirlooms!

And finally, we can’t forget kid’s art

Mom’s and Grandma’s love kids art! Seriously, they go ga ga over the drawings and paintings you made when you were a kid. We can even design a frame you that makes it easy to change out the art as the kids grow up. You’ll never go wrong giving a mother her child’s art as a present, only now it will be beautifully framed and preserved.

So no matter what you frame for Mom it will make her smile and after all isn’t that the point.

Make it special with specialty mat cutsAdd a creative touch to your framing project

What is a specialty mat cut? Most mat openings are cut in a typical rectangle shape but specialty mat cuts are unusual shapes or designs cut into the mat instead of the usual right angles. A carefully chosen specialty mat cut can creatively enhance the art. There are so many shapes from which to choose, how do you know which one is the right one? As with most framing designs, there is no one right answer.

We took the same art and added different mat cuts. Which one do you like best?

There are no bad options! It just depends on what you are trying to emphasize.

    Color Tip:

As you can see, a lot of specialty mat cuts require two mats, but you can play with the color for different effects. Use two layers of the same color for a subtle look. Or, make one layer much brighter than the other to highlight something in the art. There is no limit to how many mats can be used!

See it framed before you buy it! We know how hard it can be to make a decision from just a corner sample. But not anymore! We can show you what that corner sample will look like all around your art before you say yes. Let us show you!

    Small pieces for small places

small pieces of art for small spaces banner

No room or area is too small for artwork!

Can you name all the small places in your home that are a bit bare? Probably not, because there are more than you think. Take look around your home – do you see them now? How many of those small spots could use a touch of art?

    • The small wall space by the door
    • Open shelving in your office
    • On a tabletop
    • Above the cabinets in your kitchen
    • A windowsill
    • … the list goes on and on!

You’ve found a small place that needs art, you’ve got the perfect small piece for that space, and now you need to frame it. Here are a few ideas.

How about that small piece of art you picked up on vacation? It works well in your powder room. It is simply framed, but the contrast between the art and the mat makes your eye go right to the image, creating a noticeable piece.

    watercolor in frame

This cross-stitch says it all, and it’s perfect for your dressing table. The cross stitch itself measures 4” x 4”, but by framing it with the same silver color used on the outside of the cross stitch, it ‘extends’ the size. Using a matching purple fillet makes it stunning.

"It's expensive to be me" crossstitch in small metal frame

These small antique images are the kinds of photos you see sitting on a piano, shelving, table or desktop. The framing doesn’t need to be much larger than the photo already is, so forget the mat – just add a wide frame around it so it doesn’t get lost with all the others photos on the piano.

How to frame small pieces for small places

The key is to not introduce multiple elements, such as color, size or frills. Because this pocket watch is so small, it could have easily been over-powered. The frame is proportionate to the watch. Only one color of matting was used so that the watch didn’t get visually ‘lost’.

How small is too small to frame?

This tin-type photograph only measures 2” x 3”, but the framing takes your eye in, making the image noticeable. We added a small frame (fillet) around it and kept to one solid color of matting.

Nothing is too small to frame! Let us show you how a small piece can become a noticeable piece.

Paint colors that make small places feel larger

Go bold, go dark: Dark colors can actually make a space feel larger since they draw in your attention

Make it dynamic: Choose colors that change with lighting, such as Mint or Sage Green or a Pearl Gray

Classic white: White reflects the light and makes the walls recede, which makes a small space feel large and airy.
